If only extracting juice from other fruits and vegetables were as easy as squeezing a lemon with your bare hands. The good news is that the process is pretty much the same. The bad news: you need special equipment to do it. Before you do your homework about an affordable cold press juicer, you need to know the different kinds first.
Not all juicers are equal
There’s always a type of juicer that can serve your needs and preferences. For example, do you like juices with pulp or do you like them smooth? Are you drinking the juice because you’re on a nutrient-rich juice cleanse, or are you just wanting to enjoy a homemade beverage? Knowing how you’re going to use the juice will help you determine which juicer works best for you.
If you want to drink various types of juices and you want it now, a centrifugal juicer is your best friend. Perfect for produce that already has some water in them by default, a centrifugal juicer works by chopping up what you put in and spinning it with a metal blade. The fast spinning causes the little bits and pieces to stick against a mesh wall, and the fast motion pushes against the pieces and draws the juice out.
Because of how fast the blade spins in a centrifugal juicer, this machine is recommended for those who are casual juice drinkers with not a lot of time. Akin to putting fruits in a blender, centrifugal juicers work quickly to get your juice to you.
The main disadvantage is that any juice produced using this device is pulpy or chunky. If you don’t mind drinking your juice that has a “smoothie” feel to it, this shouldn’t be a problem. However, if you’re expecting a smooth juice drink, this isn’t for you.
Cold Press Juicer
If you’re serious about making and drinking juice, you need a cold press juicer. Unlike centrifugal juicers which produce the beverage for you right away, cold press juicers take some time. Also known as a slow juicer, these devices take your pieces of fruits or vegetables and slowly introduces them to a presser that squeezes them. This is the operation that’s closest to how you would juice a lemon or lime by hand.
However, don’t be confused by this juicer’s name. The “cold” part of its name refers to how the juicing mechanism affects the liquids and not the temperature of the final product. With a “cold press,” the mechanism emits only a small amount of energy to extract the juice. This is important if you care about keeping nutrients intact.
The main disadvantage of a cold press juicer is that it takes time to get what you need. Cold presses utilize an auger to push the fruit or vegetable further for squeezing, and that auger only makes around 40 to 110 rotations per minute, or RPM. Compare that to a centrifugal juicer’s RPM in the thousands.
Storing your juice
How long your juice lasts in the refrigerator depends on which device you used. Centrifugal juicers, because of the pulpy nature of its products, does not produce extracts that have a long shelf life. They’re suitable for short-term storage of up to 24 hours before they go bad.
Additionally, juices produced via high-speed rotations tend to “separate” almost immediately. If you’ve ever seen a smoothie left untouched for a day, you’ll see a translucent liquid that’s separated from pulpy material. This is how juices from centrifugal juicers look.
On the other hand, cold-pressed juices store for much longer, lasting up to three times longer in the fridge. And because they have a consistent, full-bodied texture, the juice won’t separate even if you leave it untouched for a few days. And most of all, cold-pressed juices keep their nutrients intact; the auger’s slow rotation doesn’t generate a lot of heat that breaks down vitamins and minerals.
Both a centrifugal juicer and a cold press juicer are great devices to have at home if you’re looking to boost your healthy food consumption. They both give you a new way to enjoy produce other than on dishes and desserts. But if you want the most bang for your buck and have some patience to spare, a cold press juicer will serve you better.
